In Brian Boru, we are transported to Ireland, where a power struggle for control of the land takes place while defending our territory from Viking attacks.

Brian Boru is a majority control game that incorporates trick-taking mechanics as the driving force behind the events on the board.

The number of rounds and cards dealt depends on the number of players. At the start of each round, players receive cards, leaving only one card undistributed. For example, in a 4-player game, each player gets 6 cards, while in a 3-player game, each player receives 8 cards. A drafting phase then follows, where players pick two cards at a time until their hands are formed.

The game's core mechanic is a scoring system based on area control. Each region on the board is activated when it reaches a certain number of markers, and the player with the majority gains control of that area and earns points.

This is the primary scoring method, but players can also score points through marriages, Viking attacks, and monasteries.
